Sunday Preview – Heavy armour from the forges of Mars

The forges of Mars glow red with activity and squadrons of new battle tanks are rolling off the lines ready to deploy in games of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. You wouldn’t want to show your face at the next Magos conclave without a few new armoured assets in tow, would you? Just imagine the embarrassment.

Karacnos Assault Tank

By taking the venerable Triaros Armoured Conveyor chassis and filling its hold with mortar tubes, the Mechanicum created one of the most effective and resilient artillery tanks of the Heresy – the Karacnos Assault Tank. Well protected on all sides and armed with sponson-mounted lightning locks, the lingering radiological flames its ordnance leaves behind are lethal to both fleshy troopers and armoured assailants alike.

Krios Battle Tank

The Krios Battle Tank is the mainstay of the armoured cohorts, making use of technology that was strange and ancient even at the time of the Horus Heresy – to create a phenomenal all-rounder with impressive speed in one package. The usual armament is a lightning cannon that can evaporate entire squads in a single well-placed blast, and it can be replaced with a short-ranged irradiation blaster for extra lethality.

Alternatively, you can build this kit as a deadly Krios Venator – a dedicated tank-killer armed with a powerful but relatively short-ranged pulsar-fusil.

Thanatar Calix Siege-automata

Towering over other automata and packing a devastating Sollex heavy-las for blowing vehicles to smithereens, The Thanatar Calix Siege-automata is one of the biggest bruisers in the Mechanicum arsenal. Punching on a par with the mighty Leviathan Dreadnoughts of the Legiones Astartes, anyone who tries to get under the reach of their shoulder-mounted cannon will find a graviton ram to the face hurts just as badly.

Ursarax Cohort

Similar in design to Thallax, the Ursarax are not full-blown automata so much as a jumble of a living soldier’s important internal bits encased in a hard shell and strapped to a jetpack. These close combat specialists generally pack a pair of wicked lightning claws, though some are armed with power fists. They move at blazing speeds thanks to their Utan jump boosters.
