Durgin Paint Forge: Forging the perfect Dwarf Lord
Durgin Paint Forge präsentiert seinen diesmonatigen Patreon Release einmal etwas anders.
Kit Focus: forging the perfect Dwarf Lord!
With this month’s two releases—the Dwarf Lords Upgrade Kit and the multi-component Berserker King kit—I’d say I’ve achieved one of my initial goals: giving all of us Dwarf players the ability to assemble the perfect Lord/Thane!
I’m writing this post not only to tease those who aren’t yet active members of this Patreon (come on, folks!) but also to explore in more detail the many options you’ll finally have at your disposal. Like many of you, I’ve been a Dwarf player for a long time (since 1999, to be exact), and over the years, I’ve always envied the modeling possibilities that players of other races had while we did not. In hindsight, I can understand why GW never created a modular kit for Dwarf characters—managing beard volumes is a nightmare! In fact, I was only able to create so many bits thanks to the possibilities of 3D printing. If I had to produce a kit like this in resin, the production costs alone would drive the final price out of the market!
But let’s go step by step:
Perfectly compatible with the other two Dwarf hero kits, the Berserker King kit aims to offer more than just a simple proxy for a Warhammer special character—it’s a fully modular kit with multiple posing options! The most challenging part was managing the two-handed weapon pose, which required two specific heads (with and without a helmet) and countless hours spent adjusting all the component dimensions for this and the previous kits! I tried to make the character instantly recognizable while redesigning some iconic elements (like the double-headed axe).
Managing the volumes of the dragon cloak was particularly tricky—unfortunately, some compromises had to be made in the name of modularity!
Il kit di Upgrade dei Lords può sembrare ridondante, considerando le tante opzioni presenti nel primo, ma questo solo se siete degli Elfi invidiosi: un vero Nano sa che non si hanno mai abbastanza opzioni a disposizione!!
It might seem redundant, considering the many options available in the first kit—but only if you’re a jealous Elf! A true Dwarf knows you can never have too many options!
With this expansion, I focused on two main elements: great weapons and heads! There are two new heads available (each in three versions: with helmet, without helmet, and adapted for the two-handed great weapon pose). In addition to two new weapon heads (naturally, an axe and a hammer), I also added two new poses. A new body introduces a slightly different stance and, above all, a more classic style compared to the body from the first kit (with more visible fabric and a chainmail hauberk). I also took this opportunity to create arms with a new type of pauldron—more massive yet subtle and perfectly compatible with the arms from the first kit (or at least for those, like me, who love asymmetrical pauldrons!).
Currently, my favorite build—and the foot Lord of my future Ironbreaker unit—is this on
Arm from the first kit
- New head, weapon, body, and helmet under the arm (I don’t know about you, but I have a particular fetish for helmets held under the arm).
Of course, the possibilities are endless, even when using just the components from the Upgrade Kit alone!
Have I finally created the kit of my dreams? Not yet. I think it will take at least a second Upgrade Kit before I can call myself completely satisfied—but that will have to wait a little longer.
In the meantime, with around 70 components created (combining the first kit and this Upgrade), I believe there are plenty of options available to assemble the Lord of your dreams—or a unit of Thanes!
I’d love to organize a painting/modeling contest dedicated to these kits—what do you think?
