Soldier of Fortune 008: Last Rites (Captain John S. Maloney)

March’s Soldier of Fortune pays tribute to the incredible deeds of a US Airborne Regimental Chaplain.

The Soldier of Fortune for March 2024 represents Captain John S. Maloney who served as the Regimental Chaplain for the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Parachuting into occupied France on D-Day with the rest of his unit, Maloney carried no weapons, but would accompany the rest of the 506th into combat, heedless of the danger to himself.

Maloney would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions in assisting medics to administer first aid to the wounded under intense enemy machine-gun fire and further assisting in their evacuation under continuous mortar fire. His Distinguished Service Cross citation concluded with the words “Captain Maloney’s fortitude, initiative and courage exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.” Maloney would survive the war and return to his native New York, dying in 1988 at the age of 75.

Maloney was the inspiration for the famous scene in the incredible Band of Brothers TV series where a US Airborne Chaplain calmly attends the fallen whilst under fire – in this role he was portrayed by Doug Cockle, and the new March 2024 Soldier of Fortune figure represents this poignant moment from the show.

Cast in fantastic, crisply detailed Warlord Resin, this miniature is perfect for representing a Chaplain or Medic in your US Bolt Action army, and an absolute must-have for fans of Band of Brothers and US Airborne players alike!
