Early History of the Duchies of Vinci – Duchies of Vinci Faction Book Preview
Up until now, the lore of the Duchies of Vinci had consisted of a few paragraphs in on Army Forge and a page on our website: a tale of poor peasants stumbling upon a powerful magical stone that allowed them to improve their technology and jealously protect their borders.
The One Page Rules scribes have toiled tirelessly in our archives to unearth a much more comprehensive history of the faction. In this preview articles, we will give you a glimpse into the contents of the Duchies of Vinci Faction Book.
The ancestors of the Duchies were errant human tribes, who settled an unwelcoming peninsula and did their best to make it their home. It wasn’t an easy task, as the land mostly consisted of brackish swamps, harsh mountains, tumultuous shores and active volcanoes.
Nonetheless, the hardy people of Vinci persevered and managed to establish little settlements, gathering under the banner of warchiefs that swore to defend their subjects. Those chiefs gradually claimed the title of Dukes.
Their first big upheaval came when envoys of the neighbouring Human Empire reached the peninsula. Much more powerful and wealthy, the Empire had soon reduced the disunited Duchies to subservient vassals.
At this stage, some of the Vinci towns had become large enough to claim more territory around them. Grudges emerged as the nascent Duchies bickered over the scraps that the Empire left them. The Imperial Governor played the Duchies against each other, making sure that none became strong enough to challenge his rule.
The relative tranquillity of Vinci was shattered by the eruption of the Havoc Wars. As followers of the Havoc Gods swept over Tyria and threatened to conquer it all, the Empire pulled all of its troops from the peninsula to focus on defending its core territory.
The Vinci adopted guerilla tactics and harassed the Havoc forces, drawing them into traps, losing them in fog-filled quagmires and monster lairs. Villagers burned their crops and retreated into the swamp, living off frogs, snakes, and berries. Whenever an enemy warband was sufficiently exhausted and demoralised, a Ducal lance would burst out of cover in a devastating charge.
This was a bitter war, and despite their best efforts, the Duchies were barely holding on. Until suddenly, the Havoc forces collapsed. Their Gods had been vanquished by the Human Empire, and the remaining warriors fled as fast they could, pursued by triumphant Vinci armies.
The war had been harrowing, and it took a while for Imperial officials to return to Vinci. When the new Governor arrived, he found that the balance of power had shifted. The Duchies were still poor, but they were able to present a united front and demand more autonomy, arguing that the Empire had failed them by abandoning the people of the peninsula to fend for themselves.
While the Duchies technically remained a province of the Empire, taxes were lightened and the Governor’s influence lessened. The peninsula was not a profitable land, and Imperial authorities set their sights on other territories, happy to claim Vinci as theirs without having to commit too many forces.
This show of unity sowed the seeds that would grow into the powerful alliance that the Duchies of Vinci are today. However, they would only be able to rise once they had found some way to tip the scales, a resource able to give them technology almost unmatched in the whole of Tyria: Mindstone.
