Waldo broke out the holiday decorations this week. He’s been busy putting up all sorts of festive lights, ornaments, and figures around the office (usually in the most inconvenient places). He asked for help moving a huge statue nestled amidst the boxes that nobody remembers buying. Waldo said he picked it up from a shady character who claimed he had 10,000 more ready to sell…

While we sort that out, let’s take a look at one of those statues you can include in your Ten Thunders Crews as Versatile: the ferocious and indomitable Zheng!

Zheng is a new Versatile model for the Ten Thunders Faction released as part of the Ashes of Malifaux book. Similar to other large Versatiles released in this wave, Zheng is a powerful model that works well in many Ten Thunders Crews due to robust offensive and supportive effects.

Offensively, Zheng is a perfect model to run down a flank and hunt down pesky models. Thanks to Savage Bite and Stalk Prey with the Sudden Strike Trigger, Zheng can easily hit a model with three Min 3 damage attacks. Savage Bite also has some great triggers like Mutilate or Worthy Opponent to put out Slow or draw cards. If Zheng is unable to reach a target, Intimidating Roar with Five-Tailed Fan can move a target 9 inches, which will ruin any model’s day.

On the supportive side, Zheng is no slouch. Warning Growl allows him to protect friendly models and Intimidating Roar is a great way to move friendly non-Minion models around the board. Zheng is also a great way to tie up enemies that would otherwise attack higher priority targets as Feline Reflexes makes it very expensive for an opponent to attack Zheng. The biggest support effect on his card is Exploit Vulnerability, which allows Zheng to discard cards to let friendly models Interact. This allows a Crew to score earlier and easier.

In addition to being a great Ability, Exploit Vulnerability opens up a lot of options for Zheng. Most models that have both supportive effects and offensive capabilities have to make a choice on which role they’d fulfill in a game. Exploit Vulnerability allows Zheng to get the best of both worlds, as attacking and killing enemy models fuels his ability to support the Crew and score points.

While great in any Crew, Zheng is especially useful in Crews that could use a speedy solo beater like Qi and Gong or Honeypot. As Zheng can command friendlies to Interact, they’re also useful in Misaki Katanaka, Fractured as it can set off Spreading Influence.
