Waldo’s Weekly – A Tango Among the Toadstools
Hey Wyrdos!
This week, Waldo decided to throw his cap into the ring and try out for Wyrd Punmaster. It’s no microscopic position; you can’t spore-radically grow a few puns here and there. Being the Punmaster demands being a fungi, willing to mold words into their tastiest forms.
As you can probably tell, we’ve got some exciting mushroom-based news! Let’s take a look at the Resurrectionist starter box, now available at your local game stores:
Rounding out the Faction based Starter boxes we are pleased to announce the Fungal Keyword, led by Batsch & Amalie. Fungal models are a perfect entry into the Resurrectionist Faction as they share traits with many Resurrectionist models, most notably, being very difficult to remove thanks to a combination of Hard to Wound and Abilities like Regeneration or Demise.
For newer players, the biggest draw of the Fungal keyword is how easily they can fill gaps in a Resurrectionist Crew. Fungal models are very self-sufficient, a stark contrast to the Vanguard keyword who work best as a unit. Fungal models have Actions and Abilities that are easy to set up solo or with a small number of Fungal models. Take for instance, the Bonus Action Spore Spurt. It gets more powerful when the target is engaged with a Fungal model, but it isn’t restricted to another Fungal model. While good alone, Fungal models gain power when hired as a group, as they share effects. For instance, a single Fungal model targeting an enemy with Spore Spurt is annoying, but 4 models doing it can destroy an opponent’s hand and leave most of the Crew with Distracted.
Returning players will find Fungal models a treasure trove of specialty tech. Fungal models are able to create patches of Severe terrain, Heal models, move Markers, and debuff enemies. This allows them to find roles in many different Crews across the Faction depending on what is needed. For instance, a Seamus player will appreciate the additional Distracted, while a Reva player will enjoy the Marker movement and Healing. Additionally, while the Fungal Keyword shares Hard to Wound with a lot of Resurrectionist models, the addition of Armor +1, Regeneration and Demise (Eternal) will keep an opponent guessing if they just expect Hard to Wound and Wounds over cost.
Batsch & Amalie
Batsch & Amalie are a powerful support model for their Crew. The draw of Batsch & Amalie is that they can protect models while still targeting enemies on the front lines. On the supportive side, Batsch & Amalie have The Power of Dance, with the powerful Fancy Feet and Cordyceps Triggers. This Action allows Batch & Amalie to Heal friendly models and affect scoring by moving enemies or Markers around.
In addition to The Power of Dance, they have a few ranged effects on their card. Fruiting Bodies allows them to turn Corpses and friendly Scheme Markers into Severe terrain, and Mushroom Cloud and Spore Spurt allow them to target enemies at a distance. Unexpected Ferocity on Mushroom Cloud can be especially nasty when other Keyword models are hired with them, as Fungal models can provide them with both Severe Terrain for plus flips and Distracted for additional damage.
Oskar
Oskar is a Health regenerating bruiser. With Armor +1, Hard to Wound, Regeneration +1, and Siphon Life it is very difficult to get damage to stick on Oskar. The best place for Oskar is near a high-value target to hold them up for a few rounds. Smell the Roses is especially good for this, as it makes the area within Aura3 of a Marker or Fungal model Severe Terrain. This can easily slow down a group of enemies or set up Oskar and other Fungal Models.
Dapperling
Dapperlings are perfect cheap shock troops. Thanks to Demise (Eternal) and Hard to Wound these 4 Wound guys take a ton of resources to remove from the board. They’re also great once they’re engaged with enemies since Latch On will start reducing enemy Df stats, allowing them to get the most out of Spore Spurt.
Outside of a melee, Fungal Bloom with the built-in Strong Winds Trigger is a terror. Strong Winds allows a Dapperling to move a Fungal model or Marker around the board. This means a Dapperling can move important Markers at will. This is very useful to move a Pyre Marker into an enemy, or to move a Scheme to win a VP.
That’s all for this week, Wyrdos. How are you planning on adding these mycological models into your Resurrectionist crews? Let us know in the comments!
