HobbyPaintCrate: Paint Minis Anywhere! is a lightweight, 3D printable „On-the-go“ hobby system in the form of a compact crate. It safely transports and stores your miniature models, paints, and tools, allowing you to paint anywhere, even without a table! It fits into small backpacks while leaving room for other items, making it perfect for home use if you lack a dedicated workspace or have limited space. Simply take it out and set it up in seconds, with everything you need at your fingertips.

Quick Setup
Setting up the HobbyPaintCrate is quick and easy, whether you’re at home taking it off a shelf or outdoors pulling it from a backpack. It only takes a few steps and just a few seconds!
Portable: You can use just the work plate or the work plate with the crate. If you don’t have a table, keep the work plate in the crate, which elevates it to a similar height as a table, allowing you to paint comfortably anywhere!
The water container with a screw-on lid is waterproof (print with 100% infill) and can be used to clean your brushes. The crate has a designated slot for it. Alternatively, you can use a rubber band to secure your own water container, holding it in place. Maximum size for custom containers: 590mm x 590mm.
Miniature fastening: rubber bands or magnets! A magnet (100mm x 30mm or smaller) can be secured to the bottom of the work plate using a 3D-printed hollow screw – no tools or glue are needed. Just use the wet palette lid or a coin to twist the screw in place with the magnet inside. Alternatively, use rubber bands for miniatures without magnetized bases. Miniatures with bases up to 670mm x 670mm fit in the dedicated area on the work plate. Larger bases may extend beyond this area but can still be accommodated to some extent.
Brush container: Keep your brushes and tools within reach. Brushes with paint can be placed in slightly tilted holes next to the water container, preventing paint from dripping and protecting your surroundings.
The cleaning paper „treadmill“ helps remove excess paint from brushes. It features two chambers: when one is used up, rotate it to use the second chamber. Pre-cut paper towel to the desired width, roll it around the brush, and slide it into the chamber. Once the visible towel is used, slide it to the right to dispose of it in a hidden space under the texture palette. Each chamber holds about ~100cm / ~40 inches of paper towel, depending on thickness. You can prepare it in advance, and an additional unit can be printed and stored in the crate.
The paint holder prevents spills by securing paints in four slots. Paints fit snugly and won’t fall out, even if the workplate is tilted up to around 75° or more. The compartment is removable for easy cleaning. Tested and adjusted to fit the most amoutn of the most common paints. For paints that don’t fit, use them directly on the workplate with the compartment removed. The maximum paint radius that fits in one of the 4 slots is 35.8mm.
Drybrush texture palette: Remove excess paint by brushing the tip over the 3D texture until the desired amount remains. The texture palettes can be swapped out for different designs, which can be unlocked as stretch goals.
Paint trays & wet palette: Use as either paint trays or a wet palette. For a wet palette, wet some paper towel, wrap it in baking paper, and place it inside. The lid prevents spills during transport and can be stored underneath when not in use. Removable parts make cleaning easy.
More: If you paint a piece without a base, use clamps to hold it near the water container to dry without contact. Add rubber or TPU stoppers to the crate and work plate to protect surfaces. An STL file for printing these stoppers is included.
The Crate
The crateprotects and securely stores the work plate and your tools, water container, paints, and minis. The lid slides out and fits into a lower slot, allowing the work plate to sit on top. The lid snaps into place and only opens fully when about 80% open, preventing accidental spills and keeping your items safe.
Secure Your Minis!
Two options: magnets or rubber bands. For magnets, just place them into the plates and slide the lid shut – no glue or tools required. If your models aren’t magnetized, you can always use the rubber bands.
Crate Designs
In addition to the standard design, themed designs can be unlocked as stretch goals. All crate and lid designs are interchangeable, allowing for custom combinations. Choose from single-color, multi-color, or multi-material prints, including transparent options. Use slicer multi color/material printing functions to create your own combinations.

The crate, the work plate, all lose parts, can be printed in different colors and materials as you like and it is made easy.

To streamline multi-color/material printing, some crate designs include attributes in their 3D geometry that allow slicer software to recognize specific areas as a single selection with the „fill“ tool. This facilitates quick color/material assignment, thanks to the clean topology and extra steps taken during file creation.

Nette Idee, vor allem wurde an viel gedacht.
Doch machen much zeei Punkte skeptisch.
Die Box kombiniert viel verschiedenes was man so zum Malen brauchen kann, aber wenn ich mir die einzelnen Bereiche anschaue fallen die winzig aus fibde ich. Als Beispiel die Nasspalette. Ja es geht um einr portable Lösung, aber hier wäre ich wohl nur dabei, das Papier zu wechseln.
Oder das kleine Zewa, eher süß als lange nutzbar…
Aber für einen 3D-Drucker finde ich die Box wiederum riesig. Alleine der Korpus dürfte Stunden dauern. Vielleicht bin ich aber auch einfach nicht der 1/2-Tage-Drucktyp für ein Teil 😉
Aber vielleicht suchen ja andere genau so eine minimalistische Lösung, um im Urlaub in der Karibik oder beim Wandern im Wald ne Runde Malen zu können 😉
Ich finde sowas super und es wäre ideal für mich. Aber ich hätte sowas wahnsinnig gerne in einer Größe für eine Eurobox.

Habe Kinder hier rumlaufen und dachte daher zuerst „Tony Box für Bastler“ so von der Optik.
Sieht auf den ersten Blick nett aus aber warum bastelt man sich sowas nicht aus einer Tupper salat Schüssel selbst?
Aber nett sieht es trotzdem aus.
Ist ja nicht der erste KS dieser Art
Und wie bei jedem davon frag ich mich brauch man das?
Und in freier Wildbahn sieht man sowas dann auch recht selten
Von den Design Schwächen dieser mal abgesehen
Die dicken Wände sind nur platzverschwendung und bringen nix wenn sie hohl sind
Und wie schon angemerkt wurde ist der Kompromiss alles in eine Box zu questschen wieder nur naja mist.
Grundsätzlich finde ich die Idee einer mobilen malstation ja gut, aber bei vielen davon, der hier inklusive, versucht man so viel verschiedenen Kram auf so wenig Raum fest zu integrieren, dass jedes Einzelelement zu winzig ist, um es auch nur ansatzweise sinnvoll zu verwenden.
Wenn ich mir hier diese winz-Nasspalette und den winz-Zewastreifen anschaue, ich sehe nicht, dass ich damit auch nur ansatzweise vernünftig arbeiten könnte. Die Quadratzentimeter für die Drybrush-Strukturpalette wären als zusätzlicher Raum für die normale/Nasspalette echt besser verwendet gewesen. Wenn ich wirklich nur minimalstauraum für meine Malsachen habe, dann kann ich auf eine Strukturpalette sehr gut verzichten. Ein beliebiges Stück Stradgut/Holz/Müll tut’s dann auch.
Aber wenn ich tatsächlich nur soo wenig Platz für malsachen hätte, dann würde ich wahrscheinlich gar keine mit in den Urlaub nehmen.
Ich will ja nun wirklich nicht der „Wer braucht das?“ Typ sein, aber wie sinnvoll ist für die meisten Leute eine dedizierte Anschaffung einer mobilen Malstation?
Versteht mich nicht falsch, ich habe mir auch schon Dinge bewusst in mobiler Variante angeschafft da es z.B. für eine Weile im Raum stand dass ich meinen Lebensmittelpunkt in ein anderes Land verlege und ich so gerade gemachte teure Neuanschaffungen (Spezifisch: Meinen Gaming Laptop, der ansonsten ein stationärer Gaming PC geworden wäre) nicht zurücklassen wollte.
Aber von solchen sehr spezifischen Situationen mal abgesehen, wie viel ist der durchschnittliche Tabletopspieler denn unterwegs dass es eine mobile Malstation braucht, statt, realistischer, einfach mal die Woche im Sommerurlaub aufs malen zu verzichten? Wie oft kommt man im Urlaub unterwegs denn tatsächlich zum Malen, und wird man realistisch betrachtet nicht doch andere Freizeitaktivitäten vorziehen?
Womit wir beim mobilen Gebrauch in einem häuslichen Umfeld landen, und da denke ich macht eine alles-in-einer-Box-Lösung einfach nicht so viel Sinn wie alles in vernünftiger Größe auf zwei bis drei Boxen aufzuteilen.
Ich bin auch jemand der ständig mit Stauraum und Platz zu kämpfen hat, das Produkt sollte mich also theoretisch direkt ansprechen, aber in einem Hobby der so platzintensiv ist wie Tabletop denke ich nicht dass es jetzt einen nennenswerten Unterschied macht ob ich alles in einer Box verstaue oder in zwei, vor allem wenn die Eine-Box-Variante ein ernsthaftes Problem damit hat wie stark alles miniaturisiert werden muss um reinzupassen.
Realistisch betrachtet würde man vermutlich mehr Platz sparen durch ein vernünftiges Regal für seine Farben. Pinsel, Nasspalette und Co. nehmen im Vergleich deutlich weniger Platz weg, selbst wenn man sie nicht hundert Prozent effektiv verstaut.
Wenn jemand jetzt denkt „wow, sowas ist genau das was ich brauche, was für eine geniale Idee!“, dann liegt mir nichts ferner als denjenigen oder diejenigen zu entmutigen! 🙂 Aber ich sehe, für mich ganz persönlich, den Punkt hinter dem Produkt nicht.
Du denkst nur an Urlaub.
Ein Stichwort: Geschäftsreisen.
Ich habe schon öfters im Hotel gemalt 😉
Es gibt wahrscheinlich mehr Tabletop Spieler die einer erhöhten Reisetätigkeit nachgehen als man vielleicht glauben mag. Ich bin sicher ein Extrembeispiel, aber ich bin mehr im Ausland als zuhause (Der Fluch, wenn man 25 Jahre für ein und dieselbe Firma arbeitet, alles weis und schon alles gesehen hat…).
Letztes Jahr habe ich so an die 300 Minis bemalt. Ich male vor allem auf Dienstreisen.
Warum? Wenn ich schon mal zuhause bin bei meiner Familie dann hat diese Vorrang.
Da habe ich einfach wenig Zeit, um Miniaturen zu bemalen.
Wenn ich mal Freizeit habe, dann spiele ich lieber, als dass ich mich stundenlang zum Malen hinsetze.
Aber auch für mich ist diese Malstation eher unbrauchbar.
Denn wenn ich auf Reisen gehe, dann habe ich für 4 Wochen ca. 100 Miniaturen mit, 30-50 Farben, eine Nasspalette und eine raue Oberfläche fürs Drockenbürsten, ca. 20 Pinsel und ein „Krimskrams Kiste“.
Was mir dann noch fehlt besorge ich mir lokal (z.B. Wasserbecher = Hotel Zahnputzbecher).
Daher schliese ich mich dem Captain an und denke, dass es da nur eine sehr kleine Zielgruppe gibt.
Mobil ist gar nicht so entscheiden, aber relativ leicht verstauber und wieder wegräumbar ist schon ein Punkt. Ich möchte meinen Malkoffer von Frontier Wargaming nicht missen. Seitdem Nachwuchs da ist und damit ein Zimmer für die Erwachsenen weniger, ist es schon praktisch, dass recht kompakt zu haben und z.B. mal am Esstisch oder im Arbeitszimmer malen zu können. Das ich ihn auch mal mit in den Urlaub nehmen kann, ist eine nette Dreingabe, passiert aber auch regelmäßig.
Den hier finde ich gerade aufgrund meiner positiven Erfahrungen mit Frontier Wargaming allerdings viel zu klein.

Habe den Ersteller des Kickstarters mal gefragt. Ist leider ein Photoshop und keine real existierende Mini 🙁
In meinen Augen ist das nicht so wirklich fürs Malen im Karibik-Urlaub gedacht, sondern für eine Malsession bei einem Kumpel oder im Klub. Zumindest ich male sehr oft auswärts. Aber bisher haben mir dafür immer meine selbst zusammengestellten Lösungen genügt.
Wenn ich zum Malstammtisch gehe, reise ich mit „Nähmaschinen-Transporttasche“ an, Platz für alles und zwei Malende, die sich das Material teilen. Geschätzt dürfte die 2,5 mal so groß sein, wie die Box oben.
Aber wenn man wirklich weiß, was man für einen Hobbytag auswärts bemalt und zielgerichtet nur mitnimmt was man braucht (das kann ich irgendwie nie), dann glaube ich, dass die Box tatsächlich reicht.
Ich habe Malkoffer gesehen, die haben in etwa das Volumen. Und ich bin immerwieder auf’s Neue überrascht, wie gut das für diejenigen funktioniert
