He sighed, watching Crazy lying in the sun. Only Hell’s would be so stupid. At this time of day, it was better to stay in the shade and rest—a concept the gringos could never seem to grasp. He checked his knives. About a dozen blades of all sizes, many carved from steel sheets, some even dating back to the old days. He picked his target and threw his first blade. It hit the board with a loud thud. Stepping to the side, he caught the second one and let it fly, whistling as it struck. He leapt left, dodging an imaginary burst of fire, and drew a third, rougher blade that landed far below the first two. Knee strike. Turning, he seized the chance to throw a heavier blade with the momentum. The metallic clang told him it had hit a nail or some other obstacle. He began cursing in Spanish as he went to inspect it. The edge was slightly damaged. Ernesto sighed, pulled a gray stone from his pocket, spat on it, and set to work sharpening the blade with whatever he had. ‘I can’t wait for some real action!’»
