“Hernandez sniffed loudly and spat a heavy glob on the dusty concrete. He took out two flasks. One of oil to grease his rifle and the other of tequila to grease the man. He loosened his road-beaten bandana, laid it on the ground, and disassembled his gun smoothly. Every part in its place, the others laughed at his meticulousness but he didn’t want to end up like Two-Finger. Wiping a few drops of sweat from his forehead, he cleaned each part before reassembling his rifle, an M16-2, a version released in 2108 for the 150th anniversary of this mythical weapon. Hernandez didn’t know much about the old world, but he did know about weapons of the past. The M16-2 was an archaic weapon, designed as a collector’s item because it was free of electronic gadgets and other man-machine interfaces; it had proven to be the ideal weapon in Eden. It loaded a wide range of ammo with ease, had few parts vulnerable to wear and tear, and required no electrical system to operate, a blessing in a post-apocalyptic world. He snapped the magazine on with a smile. It was still as fast as ever. He tied his bandana back on, took a sip of tequila, and glanced outside. Crazy was still perched on his bike, sweating in the hot sun. He was waiting for news, obviously. He’d signal when the time was right. Meanwhile, Hernandez had a tequila to finish.”
