Today’s Star Wars™: Shatterpoint preview takes a look at Savage Opress, one of the most formidable Force-sensitive Nightbrothers from Dathomir and younger brother of Maul. He is a powerful and aggressive combatant, one with the ferocity to threaten even Jedi Masters.
Opress was once a more ordinary Nightbrother, lacking a connection to the Force and, like most of these male clans, forbidden from practicing the magick of the dominant Nightsisters. His fighting prowess and seething anger caught the attention of Asajj Ventress during several grueling combat trials. Mother Talzin then subjected him to dark magicks to transform him into a brutal warrior with a powerful connection to the dark side of the Force. He would come to serve Count Dooku for a time, but his true loyalties are to Mother Talzin and his people on Dathomir. He would eventually be sent to recover his lost brother, Maul, who had been shattered by the Jedi and thought perished. After assisting Maul’s recovery, the brothers would pair up to seek revenge against Obi-Wan Kenobi, for whom they nursed a bitter grudge.
The conditioning Opress has endured has only magnified his aggressive traits, making him fearless as he rapidly closes on his foes. Furious Rush allows him to draw on the dark side to gain additional movement, moving even more rapidly if he has been injured. This is because, to Opress, Pain is Weakness and he is inured to such sensations even beyond ordinary Nightbrothers, who are notoriously resistant to all sorts of pain. This innate ability lets him endure less damage from attacks and to ignore the first Shove to which he is subjected, making it a challenge to slow his implacable advance. He seems an Unwitting Brute when he Dashes forward alongside the leader whom he has been told to serve whenever an allied Separatist or Dathomirian Primary Unit starts its activation while he is nearby.
In this way, Opress will always seek to engage the most dangerous adversary first, heedless of his own safety. He may draw on the Force when in close proximity to unleash his Dark Fury upon his foe, Exposing Force users who suffer damage from this onslaught. And proving he is indeed an Overpowering Monster, Opress attacks with extra savagery and accuracy when going against the Primary threat faced by his allies.
Savage Opress always fights with Unchained Rage, a Stance that demonstrates his brutal effectiveness in melee but also how heedless he is regarding his own defense. He wields his Double-Bladed Lightsaber like a demon, particularly when using Overpowering Monster to benefit from a strongly damaging Melee Expertise Chart. His Combat Tree allows Opress to focus almost purely on dealing damage, often his preference, though he is not without cunning and can choose to trade some damage output to Expose, Strain, and possibly Disarm his adversary. With enough successes, he can enact Dark Fury on his foe as a free Active ability in addition to his lightsaber onslaught, potentially causing even greater harm.
And that’s it for Savage Opress, one of the most intimidating looking and lethally effective Secondary Units available to the Separatist Alliance as well as his fellow Dathomirians, whether it be his brother Lord Maul or Mother Talzin herself.
