At Civitate, the German mercenary knights in the service of the pope died hard. Abandoned by the rest of the Papal army, these Swabians fought on foot, as was their custom, forming up close and hacking down any Norman adventurer who dared to close with them — they did this using their long swords-of-war. Outnumbered and surrounded, they were eventually ground down and annihilated, and the triumphant Normans went on to forge an alliance with the papacy, which granted them essential recognition of their rule in southern Italy. In its way, this battle was almost as important in Italy as Hastings would be about a decade later in England.Whilst the codes I had made for the 15mm heroic MILLENNIUM range are initially focusing on the epic First Crusade, I couldn’t not make Swabians. These can actually be used as other nations as well, because some knights from Normandy, France, Spain, Italy and (later) England preferred to use the long sword on foot. We hope to have wave 1 of the MILLENNIUM range available in late May or early June. Seljuk opponents are being made now, then we will expand the European codes.Shields on these guys are separate and worn slung over their backs.
