In Italy, the fight continues! As the Allies push north up the Italian Peninsula, they have encountered heavy resistance from the Axis and their multitude of fortified and defensive lines, slowing the allied advance to a crawl. The ’soft underbelly‘ of Europe proved to be false, instead it was a ‚tough gut‘.

This supplement for Bolt Action, and the counterpart to Soft Underbelly, focuses on the battles ranging from the Gustav Line in 1944 all the way to those of the Gothic Line in 1945, with the breakouts at Anzio and Monte Cassino of particular focus. Containing a host of scenarios to refight these famous battles, along with new units, special rules, and Theatre Selectors, this book contains everything players need to bring an end to the war and liberate Italy.

German Heer 8.8cm Flak 37 (Winter) – 39,00€

Originally developed as an anti-aircraft weapon, the infamous ‘eighty-eight’ or ‘88’, as it became known by Allied troops, had a high muzzle velocity, allowing it to reach the higher ranges bombers were capable of. This feature also made it an exceptionally deadly anti-tank weapon, as many Allied tank crews learned to their peril. As such, the 88 was also deployed as a conventional artillery piece. As one infantryman noted, the 88 was “anti-everything”…

The 88 saw service on all fronts in which the Germans fought during WWII. Capable of penetrating armour plate up to 108mm thick at ranges of up to 1,100 yards, the 88’s fearsome reputation grew immensely during its service in the Western Desert where it was one of the very few weapons capable of dealing with the British Matilda II infantry tanks. A similar scenario unfolded on the Eastern Front as the 88 was among the rare weapons able to tackle the Soviet T-34 and KV tanks.

Italian Alpini Mountain Troops – 42,00€

Known as Le Penne Nere (the black feathers), after the distinctive raven feather in their headgear, the Alpini are the Italian Army’s elite specialists in mountain warfare. Created by Royal decree no. 1056 in 1872, they are the oldest mountain specialists in the world.

In 1935, the Italian fascist government under Mussolini reorganised the Alpini into six divisions and sent three of them to fight on the Eastern Front alongside the Germans against the Soviet Union. However, the Germans deployed these elite troops (trained and equipped for mountain combat against infantry) along the flat plains of the Don River facing tanks. Despite this, the tenacious Alpini were able to escape encirclement and survive.

During the war, Italian Alpini divisions saw combat in Albania, France, Greece and Yugoslavia, as well as in the Soviet Union and even as far afield as East Africa. After the armistice in 1943, the 3rd Alpini Division joined the Allied cause while the 4th Alpini Division continued to fight alongside Germany.
