In March 1945, a truck mechanic (No. 230873) in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, based at the Mechanical Transport Training Section, Camberley, Surrey, received a visit from her parents and her sister. Her parents just happened to be King George VI and the Queen, and her sister was Princess Margaret. That truck mechanic was Princess – later Queen – Elizabeth. In 1942, aged 16, she registered with the Labour Exchange – the British employment agency at the time – and was extremely keen to join a division of the women’s armed forces. Her father was reluctant to let her do so but eventually relented. Once in the ATS, she learned how to change a wheel, deconstruct and rebuild engines, and drive ambulances and other vehicles. Joining the ATS as an honorary Second Subaltern, she achieved the rank of honorary Junior Commander within five months. She had been seen maintaining an Austin K2 ambulance and a „Tilly“ light truck. Unlike the other members of the ATS, Elizabeth returned each night to sleep in the royal residence of Windsor Castle. Coming soon from Rubicon Models… the Tilly, that is!
The SdKfz 10 was unique among German half-track designs as it used a hull rather than a frame. Approximately around 14,000 units were built between 1938 and 1945. Its main role was as a prime mover for small towed guns, such as the 2cm FlaK 30, the 7.5cm leIG, or the 3.7cm PaK 36 anti-tank gun. It could carry eight troops in addition to towing a gun or trailer. An upcoming plastic kit from us… soon!
Another upcoming release… the Dodge WC-51/52 weapons carrier. Nicknamed „Beeps“, it was a prolific light 4WD military utility truck produced by Dodge/Fargo during World War II.Together with the 1⁄4-ton jeeps produced by Willys and Ford, the Dodge 3⁄4‑tons made up nearly all of the light 4WD trucks supplied to the US military in WWII – with Dodge contributing some 337,500 4WD units (over half as many as the jeep)!
Following our WC-51/52 plastic kit is the WC-55 M6 Fargo…The M6 37mm Gun Motor Carriage, 3/4-ton, 4×4, or fully described „M6 Fargo Gun Motor Carriage with 37mm Anti-tank Gun“, was a modified G-502 Dodge WC-52, designed and built to carry an M3A1 37mm anti-tank gun combined with a gun shield, mounted on its cargo bed, facing rearward. A total of 5,380 were built by Fargo in 1942.Improvements in enemy tanks quickly rendered the 37mm gun underpowered, and better guns became available; most were later dismantled or downgraded and returned to service as WC-52 cargo trucks.
Weekend teaser for the 3rd week of March… Part of the insignias and graphics from our upcoming plastic Centurion kits covering period right after WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, 6-Day War, and the Cold War. The Centurion will be our FIRST tank release away from WW2!This is still a work in progress and is not final. Not all contents will be available upon releases.
