Crooked Dice – Colony 87 Kickstarter Preview
Work is well underway for the next Colony 87 Kickstarter. The general broad theme is ‘mounted’. Andrew May started working on sculpts this week and Will Beck has been keeping busy with lots more concept art. Here’s a preview of the Caravan guards on Dino-Birds. I got inspired by Will’s final inks and came up with this bit of background after Peter Wright and I named the birds… so say hello to the Chirroc.
THE LONG TAIL CARAVAN
Travelling the Dog Wastes alone is treacherous. Tour buses of holidaymakers venture no further than the Gustyven archipelago for a scenic view across the plains at the shattered remnants of the M’Tichi ruins.Beyond this point, most journey by hopper or grav – as the vast distances, lack of resources and harsh conditions of the unforgiving terrain make ground travel difficult for all but the heavy refinery rigs.
The exception to this is the Long Tail Caravan Company. If you are short on cash or have time on your hands, travellers can accompany these vast snaking nomadic collectives as they move between the Wastes waystations and sinkholes.
Often stretching for miles, this eclectic collection of howdahs, gasbag transports and mag-wagons form a virtual mobile town that can sustain itself for weeks. Long Tail caters for almost any need to make journeys tolerable with its countless moving shrines, stalls, cantinas, brothels and eateries.
The size and reputation of this wagon train also deters all but the most desperate raiders. However, protection is provided by the Caravan Outriders. Their domesticated Kenlenken mounts known as Chirroc, are perfectly adapted to the brutal terrain of the Wastes. The dino-birds remarkable speed and hardy constitution make the Outriders a more than effective deterrent.
Quaaaatsch! Das sind Chocobos!
