Etruscan In Composite Armour
Hi All,
What with all the recent disruption, I had completely overlooked the fact that Stavros had completed for me a set of Etruscan Nobles in Composite Armour. They came through around Christmas time (busy enough as is) and then, what with the COVID-19 hiatus, I missed them out.
Which is a shame, becasue I think these guys are some of the coolest sculpts Stavros has done for me so far! We call what these chaps are wearing ‚composite‘ because it’s actually really hard to know for sure what it is they are wearing. These types of armour show up regularly in statuary of the period, but no examples have actually been found, leading most people to believe that the armour is made of organic material that hasn’t survived the ravages of time.
And that would make sense, as not all warriors could afford plate armour, and it would not be unreasonable to assume the Etruscans had devised some form of padded or leather / linen combination to provide relatively cheap but effective body protection. In my opinion, this type of armour would also probably have been worn by the Romans, but as we don’t have any definitive examples of Romans wearing such kit in iconography, that will have to remain my opinion!
Something else to mention – these guys (as with many of the Etruscan range) could equally be used as Carthaginian nobles of the period (as we have consciously added beards to them). Trading links between Carthage and the Etrurian Dodekapolis seems to have been strong for centuries, and cross cultural influences also seem to have occurred. I can’t imagine the Carthaginians being Hellenized along with the Etruscans, but in isolation!! The few Carthaginian nobles that would have been tempted to fight for their city (Sacred Band?) may well have worn plate, Linothorax and possibly such composite kit, and I will use some of these guys to form a Sacred Band unit once released Carthaginians fighting for their Ciyt would not all have been long night shirts and antiquated Assyrian helmets!
Anyway, as always, I hope you like them, and stay safe.
Cheers
Greg
