Foot Cossacks with Turkish muskets from Ivan the Terrible’s later reign, for the Muscovites in our late 16th Century range. The Northern Wars were the fourth great conflict in Europe in this period, after the Dutch Rebellion, the French Wars of Religion and Tyrone’s Rebellion, and Ivan was the giant standing over the Livonian War, the central struggle of the Northern Wars. We have already made the Swedes for this period in their highly distinctive peasant warrior garb — an emerging giant in its infancy as a great power. We will release the Swedes once the Russians are completed sculpting.
The Cossacks were based on an early 17th Century image. Close enough I reckon! We did not make them with their caps laid sideways on their heads, as the foot Cossacks were highly active and fast moving warriors and the cap would surely have fallen off! That sort of thing seems better suited to protecting one’s head from the sun whilst campaigning.
Now on to the dvor/boyars, retainers, mounted Cossacks, artillerists and high command!
