Dwarf Leidang are essentially a militia, or are perhaps better seen as a feudal levy. They are not professional soldiers, but are freedwarves who are farmers, merchants, craftsmen, and so on. But when the king calls the Leidang it must come for as long as necessary whenever the kingdom is invaded, or otherwise for up to 40 days a year for campaigns in foreign lands.
All freedwarves, including the Leidang, are required to own at least a good chainmail shirt and a greatshield, and, unless they serve as archers, a helmet. They are also required to provide their own weapon. The civilians of the Leidang may use whatever weapon they prefer, but most choose a one handed weapon so that they may use the greatshield for self defense.
Although they are not professional soldiers, the Leidang are still very effective warriors, and the Leidang of the southern dwarven kingdoms in particular have a fearsome reputation — they are heavily relied on by their kings for war, serving often for pay beyond their 40 day period. As a result the southern kings need only small bodies of huscarls and hirdsmen.
These will be part of Khurasan Miniatures’ 15mm dwarf range and will be released soon.
