The forces of Waiqar the Undying come in many forms and take many shapes. Though they all serve their master faithfully, some perform their work through swords and blades, others through the art of necromancy. Still others rally the hordes of undead around them, keeping the rhythm of armies with sinister percussion or heralding the destruction of all who stand in their way as standard bearers.

Today, we’re looking at the Waiqar Infantry Command Unit Upgrade Expansion for the Runewars Miniatures Game. With four new figures and eighteen new upgrade cards, the expansion offers plenty of ways to customize your Runewars Miniatures Game armies while bolstering the forces of Waiqar the Undying.

Champions of Death

The undead legions of Waiqar the Undying are no mere mindless skeletal warriors. Each cursed soldier has spent lifetimes on the battlefield, honing their tactics and skills. These champions, raised using the essence of the fallen death knights, retain a measure of the legendary martial prowess wielded by their progenitor.

hese Champions abandoned the tenant of mercy long ago, the terrifying Executioner allows you to use your special modifier symbol to remove a wounded figure from an engaged tray,

putting your foe out of their misery. All it takes is one wound on a character for the Executioner to remove them without sacrificing your unit’s main action for the turn.

Less brutish is the Mistlands Saboteur,

a tactical champion skilled in gaining advantages over their opponents. At the cost of a special modifier, the Mistlands Saboteur can remove a non-figure upgrade from an engaged unit. This can disrupt your foes strategies, discarding powerful upgrades like Fire Rune or Shield Wall that can severely impact the course of the game,

and give the edge to the hordes of Waiqar.

Thundering Drums

To convey ancient battle plans, skeletal drummers beat the steady, inexorable march of the Sunderlands. It is said their grim kettle drums incorporate the ancient remains of the legionnaires who did not follow Waiqar against the wizard Timmorran.

These drummers influence the strategic decisions of the unit they accompany, and the Tactical Drummer can inspire those who walk with him in even the direst of circumstances.

Units featuring the Tactical Drummer can disengage from enemies without receiving a panic token, letting them retreat from difficult situations. This added mobility without a penalty can make a unit with the Tactical Drummer difficult to track down, and ensures that any fight the unit is involved in isn’t its last.

Heralds of Destruction

The gaunt standard-bearers further assist in keeping the ranks of Waiqar organized by providing a point of focus for the Reanimates’ simple perception. Many of the banners are mouldering remnants first hoisted in the battles of an earlier age. Others are the personal devices of Waiqar’s more prideful or obstinate lieutenants.

The Profane Banner Bearer attracts all foes on the battlefield.

With the „Protector“ Keyword, all allies at range 1-2 can’t be targeted by an attack if your opponent could target the unit with the Profane Banner Bearer instead. The standard bearer itself is prepared for an onslaught of attacks, with four defense it will be difficult to wound the figure which acts as a shield for the more vulnerable forces of Waiqar.

The Blighted Vexillum Bearer spreads the rot and disease of the undead when its unit collides with another by giving the opposing unit a blight token that can be used to remove dice from an attack.

Waiqar’s dark forces also have other ways to take advantage of these blights that rot the flesh of Waiqar’s foes.

With the Blighted Vexillum Bearer, any unit that charges you, or any unit you charge into, receives a blight token!

Raise the Dead

Necromancers stalk the ranks of Waiqar the Undying’s army, raising the fallen to fight again in the name of their lord. Some may yet be mortal, carrying out their grudges against the society that spurned them or discounted their abilities. Others may be as old as Waiqar—ancient sorcerers afflicted by the same black curse that struck down and raised up the rest of his army at the Tower of Meringyr. Regardless of their origins, these dark servants ensure that Waiqar’s forces are bolstered every time they slaughter an opposing force.

Necromancers impact the battlefield by not only damaging your foes, but by raising the dead themselves to fight for the glory of Waiqar the Undying. The Necromancer upgrade allows you to fill the ranks of your units with fallen soldiers.

Fantasy Flight Games_Runewars Cursed Legions Preview 16

With a special modifier symbol, you can refill your units with a number of figures equal to the number of natural energy runes on the field. This ability is identical to the Reanimate’s Regenerate ability, and if they are the unit that is upgraded with a Necromancer, they will be extremely difficult to wipe out.

Of course, other necromancers use their dark powers to curse those who would stand against Waiqar the Undying. The Deathcaller gives its unit the ability to spend a blight token from a target at range 1-5 and deal damage to a figure in that unit equal to the number of stable energy runes on the field.

This can give units in your undead legion a ranged damage option, even if they have no ranged attacks on their command dial.

The Deathcaller, leading a group of reanimates, uses a special modifier symbol to remove a blight token from the Daqan Spearmen at range 2. Because there are two stable energy runes on the field, the spearmen take two wounds as a result.

Deadly Forces

The Waiqar Infantry Command Unit Upgrade Expansion also includes non-figure upgrades sure to give your armies a boost. Raven Tabards gives you increased mobility, lowering the initiative value of all your blue maneuvers by one.

This allows your upgraded units to charge into battle with ruthless speed before your enemies can get into positions themselves, giving your army the advantage.

With the Waiqar Infantry Command Unit Upgrade Expansion, your undead forces will overwhelm any foe. Beat the drums of war, raise the dead, and prepare for battle!
