In the hours before the Allied invasion of Hitler’s Europe was to begin at Normandy, a number of key points had to be neutralised lest the Allied troops be thrown back into the sea and to give the Allies the opportunity to disrupt German reinforcements heading towards the landing beaches.
One of these vital targets was the swing bridge over the canal at Bénouville.
In the early hours of 6th June 1944, the men of D Company, 2nd Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, led by Major John Howard, landed by glider – the first British troops to land on D-Day.
Their primary objective was to capture the two road bridges over the River Orne and the Caen Canal
The Bénouville bridge was guarded by machine gun posts, an anti-tank gun emplacement and a machine gun bunker, but the pinpoint glider assault caught the German defenders unprepared. After a vicious firefight, the highly-trained British soldiers captured the bridge and prepared defences for the inevitable German counter-attack, which they successfully repelled. The victorious British 6th Airborne Division could now protect the eastern flank of the Allied landings.
To recognise their bravery and sacrifice, the Caen Canal Bridge was renamed ‘Pegasus Bridge’ by the local population, inspired by the distinctive divisional badge of the 6th Airborne Division.

Marrying the obsolete but reliable chassis of the Czech-built Pz 38(t) tank and the captured Soviet 76.2mm PaK 36(r) L/51 anti-tank gun, the Marder (Marten) provided the Wehrmacht with a potent self-propelled gun. These captured Soviet weapons were rechambered to accept German 75mm PaK 40 ammunition and avoid supply issues. As the war progressed, the main guns were replaced with the PaK 40 anti-tank guns.
This box set contains:
- A 1/56th scale hard plastic Marder III Ausf. H tank destroyer
- Bolt Action stat cards
- Full-colour waterslide decal sheet
- Vehicle damage markers
- An instruction leaflet
Deployed on both the Western and Eastern fronts, the Marder III also saw action in North Africa where it was one of the few German options to counter the heavily armoured British Matilda infantry tanks.
In all, 1,581 Marder III tank destroyers were produced and would continue to be employed to the war’s end in 1945.

Upgrading the Char B1, the Char B1 bis had thicker armour and an APX4 turret with a longer-barrelled (L/32) 47 mm SA 35 gun, giving it more anti-tank capacity alongside the 75mm hull-mounted howitzer. French experiences during The Great War influenced their belief a breakthrough tank would be needed in future conflicts, hence the design of the heavy Char B1 and B1 bis.
This kit allows you to build French or German gun tanks or as one of two versions of German flammpanzers, it contains:
- A French/German Char B1 bis tank
- Bolt Action stat cards
- Full-colour waterslide decal sheet
- Vehicle damage markers
Among the most powerful tanks at the time, the Char B1 bis was very effective against German Panzers in 1940 during the Battle of France. However, slow speed and high fuel consumption made it ill-adapted to the more fluid style of warfare being fought at that time.
With the fall of France, the victorious German military captured 161 Char B1 bis tanks and repurposed them under the nomenclature Panzerkampfwagen B-2 740 (f). Several were also converted into flame-throwing tanks.
