Troll Forged Miniatures: Trollcast Umstellung
Die Umstellung der Gussverfahren scheint im momentanen Trend zu liegen. Unter dem Namen „Trollcast“ stellt nun auch TFM seine Produktion um. Ähnlichkeiten mit der neuen Serie eines bekannten Herstellers sind dabei natürlich rein zufällig…
Ed has put the finishing touches to ‘Trollcast’ a new spin castable plastic – a hard (80D) custom mix containing high impact polystyrene. It is much harder, and tougher, than resin. Heat resistant up to 200F, and can handle prolonged exposure at 150F (so our Australian friends should not have any problems during the summer). It can be super-glued together, and takes standard miniature paints.
The Trollcast material will replace both metal and resin in our range. The cost of metal has sky rocketed, pushing up prices across the industry (even big players are dumping metal). Resin is good, but it turns out that the new Trollcast plastic is far better.

polystyrene? Polystyrol? Das heißt man darf keine Sprühdose verwenden?
Nach allem was man bisher gehört hat könnte dieses spincast plastic (woran mehrere Jahre gearbeitet und experimentiert wurde) gekoppelt mit den explodierenden Metallpreisen komplett den Markt übernehmen.
Ein paar Zitate aus dem Trollforged Forum:

„Paint sticks very well. It feels like a hard and I mean very hard plastic. Nothing like the bendy plastic out there. The semi translucent look is from the high impact polystyrene in the mix. It looks semi transparent.
I will dye it a grey color because it’s easy to see details. There are no bubbles at all, none. I have to create some special vents to get the results but this is exactly as it looks when I pop it out.“
„Yes, much cheaper The density per pound of metal is no way near 165 casts per pound. The cost I shown includes the waste of the button also. If I can buy bulk materials with enough customers I can get the price down even further. In time the result will be customers paying about $2 a pound for this material compared to the metal costs which are in the $15-20 range for 200lbs of metal. Last I checked if I bought only 50lbs of metal it would cost me $26.95 a pound. I’ll do this math for you: 11 plastic figures with waste 1.10 oz = 165 figures at $5 a pound = 0.03 a cast. 11 metal figures, same with the metal recycled, no waste is 5.85 oz = 2.7 sets or 29 metal figures at lets just say $15 a pound which is low metal cost = $0.51 a cast. It ends up being $0.487 cheaper in the product alone and $0.35 cheaper a cast with mold cost included and not factored into the cost of the metal price yet. I think it shows with out a doubt I should be able to cast figures for people much more reasonable. I’m not sure what people mark their figures up to for production but you would need 5.6lbs of metal to match my one pound of plastic out put. I will out last in expense over the metal.“

Es klingt super, und wenn Troll Forged da eine wirkliche Innovation gelungen ist, Hut ab.
Aber das im Artikel gezeigte Bild überzeugt mich nicht (wie eigentlich die wenigsten Miniaturen von Troll Forged).
Die Sache scheint Potenzial zu haben. Aber bevor ich in Euphorie verfalle, möchte ich dieses Potenzial auch genutzt sehen.
Die Arbeit die Ed da reingesteckt hat ist unglaublich. Und die Figuren, die er gerade mit der neuen Technik gegossen hat sind seine eigenen, weil er nicht die Minis von anderen Modellieren verhunzen wollte.
Jetzt brauch Trollforged nur noch ein zwei gute Mini-Ideen die gut umgesetzt werden und die gehen ab wie die meltallpreise. Skyrocket.
child safe halt ich persöhnlich für ein Gerüchet, denn schließlich gibt es nichts was kindersicher ist. Kinder insbesondere Kleinkinder bekommen alles klein.
